I enjoy all of the historical facts because it gives the story a very “real” flavor and adds that extra dimension, too.
I enjoy any tie-ins to real history but I don’t like it when authors adjust history or timelines to accommodate their story. I like to get new information no matter the source as long as it is factual.
The history tidbits frequently inspire me to do a bit of research and discover more about what happened. I am a Jeopardy fan and have known several questions because I read historical romance novels.
You put just the right amount of history in your books. That’s one of the reasons I love them. Too much (and too depressing accuracy) can be tiresome (thinking of another author) but your mix is absolutely perfect! So interesting about the mistaken madness diagnosis.
That’s half the reason I read historicals! Just make sure you get your facts straight. I was a history major in college and there’s nothing I hate more than reading a book and the history is wrong! It totally takes me out of the story and I can hardly finish the book. Yes, I know – I’m a little fanatical!
I love reading about true historical events and facts when I read a book.( I agree with Bernadette and Jackie above. I am so anal that I have always had maps of Great Britain and Europe – I got free from the Canadian Auto Ass. when I toured Europe in /86-still good. Encyclopaedias and dictionaries for those words and phrases I don’t know that I still use even though I also look up things on my laptop.) I then will insert some I’ve learned into a conversation just so people will think “Ah yes, Netasha is learned and wise because she has sooo many books and reads so much.”….LOL.
I agree with Nancy. I can’t think of a single time I was reading one of your books and thought, “I could really do without reading about this even”. And I love it when you write a bit about the actual event at the end of the book, too.
